Tout commence lorsqu'une ravissante jeune femme vient louer ses services pour élucider les circonstances de la mort de son frère. Ca tombe bien, Milo est spécialisé dans les sordides affaires de divorce et ce business vient tout juste de se tarir. Mais The Wrong Case dépasse tout simplement le genre : James Crumey est un véritable conteur, un vrai talent. Il travaille son personnage en profondeur pour nous livrer un véritable looser en puissance, drogué, alcoolique, sacrément seul si ce n'est lorsque ses camarades de boisson lui tiennent compagnie. L'humour de Milo est noir. D'ailleurs, ce n'est pas de l'humour mais plutôt le cynisme pur jus du gars qui n'espère rien et n'attend rien. Certes, c'est un dur à cuire mais il subit plus la vie et ses vicissitudes qu'il ne façonne et construit quoique ce soit. Ses histoires amoureuses, c'est du néant total. Milo est l'archétype du héros sacrément attachant et à un tel point que savoir qui a tué qui et comment evient une préoccupation secondaire pour le lecteur. Ce livre est à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte. The Wrong Case est un superbe "plus que polar".
